Superintendent, Dr. Andrea van der Laan, provided information on High School grant for reading.  Dr. van der Laan also gave recognition of High School Guidance Director, Mrs. Sonia Barlow, for winning an award and being honored amongst Berrien County school district for her work with Buchanan students in providing college exposure, academic direction and post high school pathways to success.

Tobler, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the recommendation as submitted by High School Principal, Mrs. Stacey DeMaio, to board, Tori Thomas, as mathematics instructor for the 2017-18 school year.  ROLL CALL VOTE: K. 2017-18 EARLY MIDDLE COLLEGE RESOLUTION

 

MOTION BY Member H. Burnett, SECONDED BY Member S. Tobler, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the 2017-18 Board resolution in support of the Berrien County 5th Year Early/Middle College:

 

WHEREAS, the Berrien Regional Education Service Agency (Berrien RESA) provides services to the local public school districts in Berrien County, including post-secondary opportunities;

WHEREAS, the Buchanan Community Schools Board of Education is committed to developing new, innovative approaches to teaching and learning in our existing and future schools;

WHEREAS, the Buchanan Community Schools Board of Education endorses the 5TH Year Early/Middle College Model for Berrien County as a partnership between Lake Michigan College, Southwestern Michigan College, Berrien RESA and the local school districts with the potential for expansion of additional postsecondary partners.

The Berrien County 5th Year Early/Middle College Model consist of:

 

·          An early college opportunity “without walls” for Berrien County students which extends into a 5th year of high school,

·          Early College application approved by the Michigan Department of Education,

·          The application process that begins in their 10th grade year of high school for admittance to the program the following school year,

·          Programming options at the local high schools, Lake Michigan College (Napier and Bertrand) campuses, as well as Southwestern Michigan College (Niles and Dowagiac) campuses,

·          The option of attaining an Industry specific Certification, Michigan Early Middle College Association Certificate (MEMCA) or an Associate’s Degree,

·          Attainment of High School diploma at the completion of the program.

 

WHEREAS, the Buchanan Community Schools Board of Education endorses the Berrien County 5th Year Early/Middle College Model for the students in Berrien County.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education endorses the Berrien County 5th Year Early/Middle College through the completion of the 2017-2018 Cohort’s program of study (i.e. 2020) and the board endorses the program as a best practice for eligible students within Berrien County.

2017 FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION – OVERNIGHT FIELD TRIP

 

MOTION BY Member J. DeVlaminck, SECONDED BY Member S. Tobler, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the Robotics team trip to , Kentwood, MI., for the purposes of 2017 FIRST Robotics Competition.  The Robotics team is expected to depart, March 30th, 2017 through April 1st, 2017, in accordance with Board Policy #2340.  This Robotics team trip will be under the sponsorship of Mr. Todd Hogue & Mr. Phillip Place.

The Board would like to thank Mrs. Mondschein for 35 years of dedication & service to the Buchanan Community School District.  We wish her the best in all future endeavors.
