FEBRUARY 18, 2019                       REGULAR MEETING        BUCHANAN MIDDLE SCHOOL

CALL TO ORDER  

PRESIDENT: Dr. Harvey Burnett opened the meeting at 6:00 pm

 

ROLL CALL PRESENT: C. Lee, K. Laesch, R. Writer, J. DeVlaminck, S. Tobler, D. Wentworth, and     H. Burnett

ABSENT:   None

 

  OTHERS PRESENT : Timothy Donahue, Tricia Lowery, and Daryl Miller

 

ADOPTION OF AGENDA

 

MOTION by S. Tobler, SECONDED BY Member D. Wentworth the agenda for the regular meeting of February 18, 2019 be adopted as written.

RECOGNITION OF VISITORS

 

Robert Fairchild and George Taylor of Engie, Tori Austin, and Jessica Elliott

 

COMMUNITY DIALOGUE CITIZENS CONCERNS  

Tori Thomas inquired about class sizes at Buchanan Middle School, specifically the current 6th grade class.  Mr. Donahue indicated he would contact her with information.

 

INFORMATION/REPORTS & NEW BUSINESS
  • Engie corporation provided an opportunity assessment report for Buchanan Schools to recommend energy savings programs.  The program permits the district, under a recently enacted state law, to complete facilities and infrastructure upgraded and later pre-pay the costs of those improvements over time with utility cost savings in future years.
  • January 23rd, 2019 Capital Committee report was provided.  Daryl Miller will provide detailed quotes to share with the Board of Education.
  • Ruth Writer, Board Vice President and Superintendent Donahue provided summary notes of MASB/MASA Conference attended February 6-8, 2019.

 

SUPERINTENDENT/DEPARTMENT REPORTS –          Buck Staff Appreciation for January/February winner:  Mrs. Angela Portt was announced.

–          Buck Staff Appreciation nominees for January/February were acknowledged:

  • Stacey Denison, Moccasin Elementary Principal

–          Updates from BHS, BMS, Moccasin, Ottawa, Director of Academics, Business Office & Operations, Food service, Technology, Transportation, and Athletics were provided respectfully.

 

ADOPTION OF CONSENT AGENDA

 

 

MOTION by C. Lee, SECONDED by R. Writer, The Board of Education approves the consent agenda for the regular board meeting of February 18, 2019 be adopted as written:

2019 FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION – OVERNIGHT FIELD TRIP

 

Motion By R. Writer, Seconded By S. Tobler, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the robotics team trip to, Kentwood, MI., for the purposes of 2019 FIRST Robotics competition.  The robotics team is expected to depart:  March 28th, 2019 and return March 30th, 2019, in accordance with Board policy #2340.  This robotics team trip will be under the sponsorship of Mr. Phillip Place.

APPROVAL TO USE SNAP-RAISE FUNDRAISER FOR THE GIRLS’ SOCCER, SOFTBALL, AND TRACK PROGRAMS 2018-19 SEASON MOTION BY Member D. Wentworth, SECONDED BY Member S. Tobler, The Buchanan Board of Education approves the Athletic department’s request as submitted by Athletic Director Lonnie Hoover, to use the email based fundraiser program, SNAP-Raise to utilize text and social media for the BCS Girls’ Soccer, Softball, and Track programs during the 2018-19 school season.  This email based fundraiser allows for friends and family globally to donate to a specific cause without purchasing a service or product.  ROLL CALL VOTE:  C. Lee, K. Laesch, R. Writer, J. DeVlaminck, S. Tobler, D. Wentworth, and H. Burnett NAYS:  None     MOTION UNANIMOUSLY  ADOPTED
